Early 1997, GS approached me to join its GSAM division in Chicago. Most people there are very sharp and professional during the 3 rounds of interview there.

My last round is with the head of GSAM at the time. He was 30 mins late. I was not happy because I was taking a break from the trading floor at SBCWarburg (pre-UBS merger) in the CBOT building to be at the Sears tower during lunch time.

I was joking with the GSAM guy once we sit down: you own me 30x10=$300 time value for being late. (It is a SBC trading floor rule at the time for people late to the meeting). I asked him to give me a good reason to forgive the fine and join GS.

To GS''s credit, the hard to refuse offer ($$$) came in from New York 2 days later. I decided againt it.

Like the Mastercard commercial, sometimes there is something money can''t buy - priceless.
|
